A Message from oFarm:

"Recently saw a bumper sticker that said, "Support your local sunrise" and that just really resonated with me. One joy I take from the earlier morning days is the vast amount of sunrises I get to catch! Like this one the other day, where the moon was just a lil toe nail clipping in the sky!

Hope y'all have been enjoying the peppers!! There's definitely plenty more where they came from; so be on the look out for another rotation soon! The shishito peppers are new on the farm this season, and they have been beyond fruitful! Might have to stick around and grow em again next year??? Seems like folks at the farmers markets love them, and maybe y'all do too?? Oh and another new crop on the farm; Italian basil! We schemed a pesto project with our kitchen and already sent off a ton to soon become pesto. Even with that, we are still literally swimming in their fragrant leaves.

You can catch it along with the rainbow chard as subs in the box this week! Until next time!

xoxo

Weekly Staples:

Beverage

Hard Cider - Eris Cider (Irving Park, Chicago, IL)

Storage Tip - Keep refrigerated.

Bread

Wednesday: Pumpernickel
FranHer Bakery (Pilsen, Chicago, IL)

Thursday: Toasted Sesame
Publican Quality Bread (Fulton Market, Chicago, IL)

Friday: Garlic Boule pHlour Bakery (Andersonville, Chicago)

Storage Tip - Keep your bread cut side down in a bag on your counter for two to three days. At that point you will want to slice or rip/cut your bread into pieces and freeze for future toast, croutons, or panzanella! If it’s particularly hot, you may want to move it to the refrigerator after a day or two (the only time we will tell you to refrigerate bread).Tips to freshen up your bread

Mushrooms

Wednesday: Crimini ‍River Valley Ranch (Burlington, WI)

Thursday: Oyster ‍ River Valley Ranch (Burlington, WI)

Friday: White Button River Valley Ranch (Burlington, WI)

Storage Tip - Open the paper bag to reduce moisture, and keep mushrooms out of plastic. Smoke, dehydrate, or par-cook and freeze for longer storage.

Eggs‍ ‍

Pastured Eggs - Finn's Ranch (Buchanan, MI)

Storage Tip - You can freeze your eggs to make them last longer. Crack and scramble in a container, or crack whole into oiled muffin tins, and keep frozen for up to 6 months.

This Week’s Fresh Produce:

Bok Choy - Wild Coyote (Berrien Springs, MI)
Storage Tip - Store in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator -- unwashed and in a perforated plastic bag -- and use within a few days. When you do use it, remember that its cluster of stalks hides dirt, so wash it well.

Broccolini or Asian Sweet Stem Cauliflower - Wild Coyote (Berrien Springs, MI)
Storage Tip - Store in the fridge. It is best not stored in an air-tight container since it needs air flow to avoid accumulating moisture. You can wrap it a damp paper towel or stored like a bouquet with the stem in a glass of water.

Fredonia *Seeded Grapes - Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, MI)
Storage Tip - Store in crisper and allow for some air flow to minimize moisture. These go quick so eat within 2-3 days.

Barlett Pears- Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, MI), Seedling Orchard (South Haven, MI)
Storage Tip - Keep at consistent temperature on the counter for up to a week, or in the crisper for up to a month.

Cherry Tomatoes  - Seedling Orchard (South Haven, MI)
Storage Tip - Tomatoes should be kept at room temperature on the counter away from sunlight. Consume within a few days

Bell Peppers/Carmen/Shishitos - The Urban Canopy (Auburn Gresham, Chicago, IL) - for oFarm
Storage Tip - Store dry in an open plastic bag in the crisper for up to two weeks.

Substitutions

Items for those already opting out of beverage, bread, mushrooms, or eggs OR having a conflicting allergy; subject to change, even if specified. Please refer back to this newsletter throughout the week for updates

Basil - The Urban Canopy (Auburn Gresham, Chicago, IL) - for oFarm
Storage Tip - To keep herbs perky for more than a few meals, trim the stems as you would flowers to remove dried-up ends, then stick the bunch in a tall glass of water. Loosely cover with a plastic bag and keep it on the counter. This method allows moisture to stay in while ethylene escapes, making for herbs that remain vibrant for nearly a week. Loosely wrap in a paper towel and place in an airtight container in the fridge for around 2 weeks.

Turnips - The Urban Canopy (Auburn Gresham, Chicago, IL) - for oFarm
Storage Tip - Remove greens from the root for the root to last in the crisper or a plastic bag in the fridge. Greens should be used within 2 days.

Chard - The Urban Canopy (Auburn Gresham, Chicago, IL) - for oFarm
Storage Tip - Make sure greens are good and dry. You can wrap the greens in a paper or cloth towel to cut down on extra moisture. Then store in a plastic bag in the fridge for up to a week.

Poblano - Wild Coyote (Berrien Springs, MI)
Storage Tip - Store dry in an open plastic bag in the crisper for up to two weeks.

Pro-Tip for Produce Longevity

When your share arrives, immediately unpack your produce and move into proper storage containers!

Always Wash Before Eating

As a general best practice with all produce including ours, we recommend washing produce before eating.

Please Remember to Save and Return LUCSA Packaging

We request that you return your wax box and Finn’s Ranch egg cartons during your next delivery. Help practice sustainability by helping us re-use all of these items for future deliveries.

We’re unfortunately not able to re-use; non-Finn’s egg cartons, rubber bands, bags, berry containers or glass jars.
