A Message from oFarm:

"Autumnal Equinox Blessings to all!! Our girl Fall really said, 'hey bish...i'm here'! These continual 55 degree lows got us pullin the eggplants and tomatoes out. Bye bye summer crops....but don't you worry, there will still be lots of peppers left to enjoy evil laugh I can already see the big slow down though. Our cherry peppers for the kitchen aren't quite ripening up as quickly as they were a mere two weeks ago. I cherish these moments, when I can see the subtlety in change and fruitfulness of sooooooooooooooooo many plants!  Y'alls fave crop is comin back around one last time to really get y'all in the mood for fall...it's got the fronds you all love and desire. That's right; it's FENNEL TIME!!!! I hope y'all enjoy our sweet anise-y friend one last time! I'm sure gonna miss our girl when she's gone!

Until next time!

xoxo

Weekly Staples:

Beverage

Sparkle Sparkling Water - Sparkle by Wisco Pop (Madison, WI)

Storage Tip - Keep refrigerated.

Bread

Wednesday: Toasted Sesame ‍ Publican Quality Bread (Fulton Market, Chicago, IL)

Thursday: Garlic Boule
pHlour Bakery (Andersonville, Chicago)

Friday: Pumpernickel
FranHer Bakery (Pilsen, Chicago, IL)

Storage Tip - Keep your bread cut side down in a bag on your counter for two to three days. At that point you will want to slice or rip/cut your bread into pieces and freeze for future toast, croutons, or panzanella! If it’s particularly hot, you may want to move it to the refrigerator after a day or two (the only time we will tell you to refrigerate bread).Tips to freshen up your bread

Mushrooms

Wednesday: Shiitake ‍River Valley Ranch (Burlington, WI)

Thursday: White Button ‍River Valley Ranch (Burlington, WI)

Friday: White Button ‍River Valley Ranch (Burlington, WI)

Storage Tip - Open the paper bag to reduce moisture, and keep mushrooms out of plastic. Smoke, dehydrate, or par-cook and freeze for longer storage.

Eggs‍ ‍

Pastured Eggs - Finn's Ranch (Buchanan, MI)

Storage Tip - You can freeze your eggs to make them last longer. Crack and scramble in a container, or crack whole into oiled muffin tins, and keep frozen for up to 6 months.

This Week’s Fresh Produce:

Kale- Wild Coyote (Berrien Springs, MI)
Storage Tip - Make sure greens are good and dry. Either loosen or remove the rubber band. You can wrap the greens in a paper or cloth towel to cut down on extra moisture. Then store in a plastic bag in the fridge for up to a week. Or keep in a glass of water like a bouquet!

Yukon Potatoes - Garden Gate Farm (Fairbury, IL)
Storage Tip - Keep cool, dry and out of direct light, on your counter, in a cupboard or in a perforated paper bag for up to 6 months.

Fennel - The Urban Canopy (Auburn Gresham, Chicago, IL)
Storage Tip - Remove greens to preserve the stem longer. Greens can be used within a week and the white part can be stored in a bag in the crisper for a month or so.

Garlic - Wild Coyote (Berrien Springs, MI), Many Moons Farm (Black Earth, WI)
Storage Tip - Keep cool and dry on the counter for up to a month.

Carmen/Shishito/Bell Peppers - The Urban Canopy (Auburn Gresham, Chicago, IL)
Storage Tip - Store dry in an open plastic bag in the crisper for up to two weeks.

Substitutions

Items for those already opting out of beverage, bread, mushrooms, or eggs OR having a conflicting allergy; subject to change, even if specified. Please refer back to this newsletter throughout the week for updates

Onions - Garden Gate Farm (Fairbury, IL)
Storage Tip - Keep cool, dry and out of direct light, on your counter, in a cupboard, or in a perforated paper bag for up to 6 months.

Tomatoes - Wild Coyote (Berrien Springs, MI)
Storage Tip - Tomatoes should be kept at room temperature on the counter away from sunlight. Consume within a few days

Thai Basil - Wild Coyote (Berrien Springs, MI)
Storage Tip - To keep herbs perky for more than a few meals, trim the stems as you would flowers to remove dried-up ends, then stick the bunch in a tall glass of water. Loosely cover with a plastic bag and keep it on the counter. This method allows moisture to stay in while ethylene escapes, making for herbs that remain vibrant for nearly a week. Loosely wrap in a paper towel and place in an airtight container in the fridge for around 2 weeks.

Arugula - Wild Coyote (Berrien Springs, MI)
Storage Tip - Repackage in a non-biodegradable plastic bag or container with a towel or paper towel for up to a week.

Pro-Tip for Produce Longevity

When your share arrives, immediately unpack your produce and move into proper storage containers!

Always Wash Before Eating

As a general best practice with all produce including ours, we recommend washing produce before eating.

Please Remember to Save and Return LUCSA Packaging

We request that you return your wax box and Finn’s Ranch egg cartons during your next delivery. Help practice sustainability by helping us re-use all of these items for future deliveries.

We’re unfortunately not able to re-use; non-Finn’s egg cartons, rubber bands, bags, berry containers or glass jars.
