Why Compost with The Urban Canopy?

Clean and Convenient

Our container-swap model means there’s no need to deal with dirty waste receptacles- your filled containers are replaced with washed and sanitized containers at each pickup!

The easy-to-use member portal makes it easy to skip pickups and track personal environmental impact.

Unparalleled customer service

The Urban Canopy has staff dedicated to providing educational support and availability to table at community events and help residents find the solution that will work best for them. Our recent merger with Collective Resource Compost Cooperative doubles our capacity to provide this education.

Environmental Impact

In 2025, our average residential Compost Club household composted approximately 395 lbs. of food scraps. Per data from CompostNow.org, this results in a net decrease in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1,027 lbs. of CO2. For multi-unit buildings, these numbers are even better, due to the efficiency of collecting a large quantity of food scraps at one location.

Experienced Management

The Urban Canopy brings an experienced management team to oversee the Compost Club’s collection of food scraps for your municipality. The management team has years of experience operating commercial, residential and event composting services for the greater Chicagoland area.

Convenient Data Reporting

Our convenient member portal provides up-to-date environmental impact data specific to your property. Our drivers estimate the weight of each container upon pickup, and we calculate your impact using established conversion ratios from the EPA's Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.

Attract and Retain Tenants

“Sustainability in today’s rental market also extends to renters’ priorities and values. Amenities that offer a visible commitment to the environment, such as recycling, bike racks, and community gardens, are ideal examples of this type of amenity. “

“For growing numbers of companies searching for new spaces to lease, sustainability is now a top consideration.

While traditional priorities such as location and talent continue to factor strongly, buildings that tick the boxes as low carbon, high quality spaces are increasingly sought after – even in a subdued office leasing market.

And tenants are often prepared to pay more to secure sustainable space. JLL research shows an average green premium of 7.1% across eight major cities in North America, 9.9% across nine cities in Asia Pacific and 11.6% in London.”
